Capturing Catalina: A Birthday Adventure Through My Lens


For my birthday on November 3rd, 2024, I decided to take my fiancée on an unforgettable trip to Catalina Island. It had been a while since we traveled somewhere new, and since my parents and older sibling had visited before and raved about it, I knew it was time to experience it for myself. This trip wasn’t just about celebrating another year; it was about capturing a place I had always wanted to photograph, all while soaking in the experience with no strict agenda—just the flow of the island guiding us.

The Journey Begins: LAX to Avalon

We landed in LAX, where my older brother picked us up and drove us to Long Beach, where we boarded the Catalina Express. As the boat made its way toward the island, I took in the misty, cinematic scene of Avalon emerging from the ocean. The mountain tops unveiled themselves through the haze, creating a mysterious and breathtaking approach. I managed to snap a shot of a couple parasailing in the distance, an unexpected but perfect capture to set the tone for the trip.

With my Canon R5, Mavic 3 Drone Cine, and a rented Canon 100-500mm RF lens, I was ready to photograph everything the island had to offer. I also brought along my Osmo Pocket 3, which I used to film most of the vlog for my YouTube channel.

A View From Above: Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel

Upon arrival, we were met by Yafet, a hotel staff member who warmly greeted us, took our luggage, and even invited us to join the Wildlife Conservancy tour the next day. That friendly gesture set the tone for how welcoming the island felt.

We stayed at the Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel, a spot rich in history with an unbeatable view. Our King Suite with a wraparound balcony overlooked the ocean, Avalon, and the mountains beyond. The views were some of the best I have ever witnessed in my life. From that balcony, I captured a raven perched on a treetop, the distant lights of a cruise ship, and the soft glow of Avalon coming to life at night. A cool moment was realizing that the parasailing couple I photographed earlier were actually staying next door. After chatting with them, I shared the image via AirDrop, giving them a lasting memory from their own adventure.

A Starry Night Above Avalon

With little light pollution, I took advantage of the opportunity to try some astrophotography. I didn’t get perfect light trails, but I did capture the stars shining bright over the trees and Avalon. More importantly, it was a zen moment for me. Standing on the balcony, feeling the crisp fall air, and seeing the vast night sky made me appreciate the stillness of the island.

Halloween on Catalina: Street Photography & Community Vibes

The next day was Halloween, and we started it with a trip to the Catalina Island Conservancy with Yafet and his team. We rode through Catalina’s valleys and hills, a thrilling (and slightly nerve-wracking) drive on some of those bends. The final stop was the plant nursery, where my fiancée, a true plant mama, got to enjoy working with the plants while I documented the experience.

While there, I met Marcus, a local who shared what life is like on Avalon. The island has a small, close-knit population where everyone respects each other. Hearing about how their high school football team isn’t even a traditional one due to their unique circumstances made me realize how different yet special island life is.

Later that day, we headed into downtown Avalon for Halloween celebrations, and that’s when my street photography instincts kicked in. The locals were out in full costume, trick-or-treating, and truly enjoying their island. It was amazing to capture these candid moments, from kids in creative outfits to families strolling along the pier. We ended the night at The Locker Room, a local bar where we met up with Yafet again, and at that point, I didn’t feel like a tourist anymore—I felt like I belonged.

A Different Avalon: The Tourist Surge

Friday morning, the day we had to leave, we woke up to a completely different Avalon. The town, which had been so peaceful and personal the previous days, was suddenly packed with cruise ship tourists. It was a stark contrast to the welcoming, intimate vibe we had come to love. Though we still enjoyed some great sushi, it was clear that the island felt different when overrun with visitors. Soon after, it was time to board the Catalina Express and leave the beautiful island behind.

A Reason to Return

While this trip was incredible, I know I need to go back. I barely scratched the surface of Catalina’s photography potential. Next time, I want to capture more wildlife, explore the botanic garden, and even try some underwater photography on the submarine tours. I’d also stay for more days to avoid feeling rushed and to truly embrace every moment.

This trip wasn’t just about celebrating a birthday; it was about rediscovering my passion for photography and storytelling. Catalina Island is a photographer's paradise, and this was just the beginning.
